Financial Incentives/Resources for Historic Preservation

Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credits: Available only for the restoration or rehabilitation of income-producing historic properties (not available at this time for the private homeowner). Perhaps one of the most powerful and successful incentives for the rehabilitation of historic buildings and neighborhoods, this program essentially reduces an investor's amount of taxes owed. For multi-million dollar projects, such a credit can make a big difference. Click here for more information.

National Trust Community Investment Corporation: Considering a tax credit project? Know of a tax credit project that might be taking place in the DC area? The National Trust Community Investment Corporation makes equity investments in tax credit projects and will offer a 1% referral fee to the DC Preservation League if you refer a new project to them on our behalf. Visit their website for more information.

Historic Homeowner Grant Program: Residents in twelve DC historic districts may qualify for a grant to complete exterior or structural work. These districts are: Anacostia, Blagden Alley/Nayor Court, Capitol Hill, Fourteenth Street, LeDroit Park, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon Square, Mount Vernon Triangle, Shaw, Strivers' Section, U Street and Takoma Park. Certain income restrictions do apply. For more information about this DC Government program, click here.

Easements: Owners of properties listed on the National Register or of significant historic land parcels may place legally binding conservation restrictions on their properties and donate them to an easement holding organization. This organization will hold the easement and monitor compliance with its terms in perpetuity. The owner of the property, in exchange, may realize favorable tax advantages. Organizations that currently hold local easements: National Trust for Historic Preservation; Foundation for Historic Georgetown; The L'Enfant Trust; The American Easement Foundation; Capitol Historic Trust.

Partners for Sacred Places: A non-sectarian, non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to assisting congretations and communities in sustaining historic religious properties. Visit their website for more information.
