Old Naval Hospital
9th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, SE

One of the many medical facilities constructed in Washington during the Civil War, this 50-bed hospital, built in red brick Italianate style, served naval forces from 1866 until 1911. From 1920 to 1953, it housed the Temporary Home for Veterans of All Wars. The Old Naval Hospital is still a federally owned property, but it is now permitted to the District Government. The building and its grounds lack systematic maintenance and have suffered insensitive alterations. Both the building and its grounds need to be renovated and restored. Located within the Capitol Hill Historic District, it was added to the D.C. Inventory in l964 and to the National Register in 1974.

Co-chairs: Patrick Lally and Donna Hanousek
