Most Endangered Places for 2001

Ralph Bunche House
1510 Jackson Street, NE

Photograph of Ralph BuncheBuilt in 1941 for noted educator and diplomat Ralph Bunche (1904-1971) and his family, this DC and National Register listed landmark designed by architect Hilyard Robinson in the International style has been inappropriately altered and turned into a residential facility. Mr. Bunche was the first African American desk officer at the US State Department. In 1950, he became the first African American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in mediating the 1948 Arab-Israeli war while serving as Under Secretary General of the United Nations. Both Robinson and Bunche were affiliated with Howard University, with Bunche serving as chairman of the political science department. DCPL is helping the both the Brookland community and Howard University to bring public recognition and awareness to both the house and the man who was one of WashingtonÕs most famous residents.

Chair: Charles I. Cassell
