Most Endangered Places for 2001 Historic D.C. Public Schools
DC Public Schools announced plans in 1997 to sell or lease 51 of 153 schools built between 1864 and 1959. These schools are historically significant and eligible for landmark status. In 1999, the League successfully sponsored the landmark application for the Webster School, 740 H Street, NW, and continues to fight for its preservation. DCPL has nominated additional historic schools including the Gales School and the Gates School and has supported several other landmarks, including the Military Road School. DCPL is also working with the PTA to preserve the Stevens School, which has been successfully added to the National Register of Historic Places as the oldest elementary school built to provide equal facilities for African-American children. A multi-property nomination has been submitted to the DC State Historic Preservation Office. While some schools are being successfully restored and kept in active use, others have been sold and adaptively reused. Still others have been demolished by DCPS for construction of new schools, notably the Kelly Miller Junior High School, another 1940s Art Moderne landmark by Municipal Architect Nathan C. Wyeth. The Strong John Thompson School, an active neighborhood elementary school saved from demolition by DCPL's intervention, is currently being sponsored for Landmark status.
