Most Endangered Places for 2002

Historic D.C. Public Schools

DC Public Schools announced plans in 1997 to sell or lease 51 of 153 schools built between 1864 and 1959. These schools are historically significant and eligible for landmark status. DCPL has nominated historic schools including the Gales School and the Grant School and has supported several other landmarks, including the Military Road School (photo at left). DCPL is also working with the African American Heritage Foundation to nominate the Chain Bridge Road School as a local landmark. A multiple-property nomination has been unanimously approved by the DC Historic Preservation Review Board for forwarding to the National Register of Historic Places. While some schools are being successfully restored and kept in active school use, others have been sold and adaptively reused.

The Alexander Crummel School was recently designated as a local landmark, but continues to deteriorate without adequate funding and a plan for its use. The Strong John Thompson School, an active neighborhood elementary school saved from demolition with DCPL’s intervention, has a landmark application pending. Although much has been accomplished to preserve these important places within our neighborhoods, significantly more needs to be done.
