Since its founding as Don't Tear It Down in 1971, when a group of concerned citizens came together to save the Old Post Office on Pennsylvania Avenue, the organization now known as the DC Preservation League has advocated on behalf of more than 28,000 historic buildings designated as individual landmarks and within historic districts across the city.
About the Historic Buildings
F Street NW The Berry & Whitmore Building, 1101 F Street, NW, was constructed by Henry A. Strong in 1891 at the historically important corner of 11th and F Streets. As designed by W. Bruce Gray and Artistide Rodrique, this prominent six-story building displays a deeply overhanging galvanized metal cornice and elaborate decorative pressed-brick details.
11th Street NW Also built in 1891, the Corcoran Fire Insurance Company, 604 11th Street, NW, was designed by prominent Washington architect James G. Hill. This four-story building, attached to the north wall of the Berry & Whitmore Building, is executed in heavily rusticated granite with neo-gothic details that enable this small commercial building to appear almost as prominent as its more imposing neighbors.
The Philipsborn & Company Building, 606-612 11th Street, NW, represents the unification of three buildings behind a single façade designed by Frederick B. Pyle in 1919. Pyle’s brick and glass neo-classical composition is dominated by a center bay defined by rusticated pilasters with swag-draped capitals and an elaborate cornice.
Plans for the rehabiliation of the historic buildings were developed by Shalom Baranes Associates.
About the New Construction
1199 F Street NW Located at the southwest corner of Square 320, 1199 F Street, NW, is a twelve-story Class A office building designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. The new building, which is sheathed with a stone, metal, and glass curtain wall system, includes a six-story atrium beneath a 110-foot skylight. This dramatic space uses the restored rear elevations of the historic buildings on 11th Street as a backdrop.
