August 2009
Picnic on the Potomac
On August 15th, DCPL was joined by over 100 members and friends at its Picnic on the Potomac at the Washington Canoe Club (WCC), 3700 Water Street, NW.
Reed MacMillan was the lucky raffle winner of the kayak generously donated by Mr. Sandy Murdock.
Founded in 1904, WCC tradition holds that the clubhouse was built by the members, using salvaged timbers and lumber from burned barns.
Today, WCC faces reassessment of the public land they lease from the National Park Service that increases their yearly rent from $5,000 to $180,000. WCC does not however appear to be the only target of this practice, as NPS is reassessing it's leased public land system-wide.
DCPL will continue to work with WCC to determine their options moving forward.
A special thank you to Colonial Parking and Monarc Construction for their sponsorship of this event.

Demolition by Neglect Case Sees Promising Future
On August 18th, DCPL's Executive Director Rebecca Miller joined leadership from the Dupont Circle Conservancy (DCC) and staff from the Office of the Mayor, Councilmember Jack Evans' office and Michael Beidler of the DC Historic Preservation Office (HPO) to learn that the deteriorating house located at 1841 16th Street, NW, was under contract to Potomac Construction Group with a plan to convert the property into three condominums.
Neighbors and preservationists became concerned about this 1890's corner property in the 16th Street Historic District in June 2008, when two interior walls collapsed and tenants and adjacent residents were evacuated for fear of imminent collapse.
Through agressive advocacy by DCPL, DCC, and HPO, the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) agreed to issue permits for the building's stabilization in lieu of demolition.
Monarc Construction has completed the initial stabilization and will be working with Potomac Construction Group on the exterior rehabilitation of the property.
