July 2009
DCPL and Dupont Circle Conservancy Rally to save 1841 16th Street, NW from the Wrecking Ball
On June 15th, DCPL joined the Dupont Circle Conservancy (DCC)and neighbors in the 16th Street Historic District to voice concern over the potential demolition-by-neglect case at 1841 16th Street, NW. Neighbors and preservationists were concerned that this prominent corner rowhouse, built in 1890 and designed by Nicholas Haller, would be demolished by the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) based on its unstable condition.
Assessments done by John Bellingham, DCPL President and head of Monarc Construction and Allyn Killsheimer of KCE Structural Engineering determined the house to be stable and it's potential demolition unnecessary.
DCRA had contracted with a firm to stabilize the the structure. The DC Historic Preservation Office is keeping close tabs on the work, ensuring that it meets preservation standards.

Not Your Average Walking Tours!!
The DC Preservation League strives to bring to its membership tours of unique, exciting and generally inaccessible locations. In 2009, we've toured St. Elizabeths West Campus five times, the Old Naval Observatory in Foggy Bottom twice, and most recently, the newly rehabilitated Old DC Courthouse in Judiciary Square.
DCPL is currently planning walking tours for the fall. Do you have an idea for a walking tour or a building you've been dying to see? Please let Amanda McDonald know at amanda@dcpreservation.org
A special thank you to the General Services Administration, for assistance in touring St. Elizabeths, Jan Herman, Historian, Department of the Navy, for the Old Naval Hospital, and Hany Hassan, Beyer Blinder Belle Architects and Planners, LLP, for their assistance the tour of the Old DC Courthouse.
