A Landmark Building Centennial

Join the DC Preservation League on April 22nd, as we celebrate the centennial of the Organization of American States Building at 17th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW.

The Organization of American States (formerly known as the Pan-American Union) was built in 1910 and designed by Paul Philippe Cret (1876-1945). The imposing classical stone building and its red tile roof has elements which allude to the Spanish Colonial Architecture in South America. Inside, the building is organized around a planted patio covered by a sliding glass roof. Cret was born in Lyon and attended the L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. As a preeminent interpreter of the Beaux Arts style, Cret designed the National Memorial Arch at Valley Forge National Historical Park, public buildings in Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, and Detroit, and the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Federal Reserve Board Building, the Duke Ellington and Connecticut Avenue bridges over Klingle Valley in Washington, DC. Cret designed the OAS Building with Albert Kelsey and its design and construction from 1907-1910 make this building Cret’s first major commission, and the one that set the standard for his significant career to follow.

Tickets are $100 each and proceeds support DCPL's education and outreach programs across the city.
