Mayor's Awards for
Excellence in Historic Preservation
Join the Honorable Adrian M. Fenty, the DC Office of Planning (OP), the DC Historic Preservation Office (HPO), and the DC Preservation League (DCPL), Washington's citywide non-profit historic preservation organization at a reception and ceremony to celebrate the 2007 Mayor's Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation on Tuesday, October 9th at 6:30 pm. The event will take place at the revitalized Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H Street, NE.
The Art Moderne Atlas Theater was designed by nationally prominent theater architect John Zink. Opened in 1938, the building's movie house and shops were the impetus for considerable growth along H Street, NE, a historically important commercial corridor. The theater closed in 1970, a casualty of the 1968 riots that devastated a number of downtown retail thoroughfares. In 1999, a nomination submitted by DCPL was the basis for the Historic Preservation Review Board's designation of the building as a DC Landmark.
This event is free to the public but reservations are required. Please reserve your place today by emailing rsvp@dcpreservation.org. Please be sure to include your name, phone number and the name(s) of any guest(s).
Valet Parking: $10
Free Shuttle Provided from Union Station
