Summer Tours Beat the Heat

From Wheat Row in Southwest to the Atlas Theater in Northeast, participants in the League’s “Summer in the City” walking tours enjoyed visits to some of Washington’s best kept secrets. With unusually cool weather in June and July, the Southwest and F St. tours literally beat the heat. (For those hearty souls who attended the H St. tour in August, the League provided bottles of chilled water before the start of the walk!)
Each walk included a special behind-the-scenes visit, as well as refreshments: On the June tour of Southwest, the DC Fire Department permitted participants below deck on its fire boat, the John Glenn. The crew then treated onlookers to a waterworks display as the John Glenn left the dock for its rounds on the Potomac.
F Street walkers enjoyed Eric Colbert’s description of his recent preservation work on 918 F Street, headquarters of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. The preserved building stands in stark contrast to the facade of the Atlantic Building immediately next door.
On H St., Stuart Bennett of The Language Doctors opened his newly renovated building at 500 H St., NE, and provided cookies and beverages at the Mid-Day Cafe, which recently opened on the ground floor.

Left, Southwest tour participants enjoy the waterjet display of the John Glenn; middle, Eric Colbert explains the historic basis for the entranceway of 918 F St., NW; and right, H St., NE participants gather beneath the marquis of the Atlas Theater.
