Spring 2001 Thirtieth Anniversary Celebrated at Gallup Headquarters Over 200 loyal members and supporters of DCPL gathered on the evening of May 3 to celebrate the League's thirtieth anniversary at the Gallup Building, 901 F Street, NW. The Gallup Building, which encompasses a newly constructed eight-story office tower and the rehabilitated historic Masonic Temple, was a fitting locale in which to mark thirty years of preservation in Washington, DC. The French Renaissance style Masonic Temple was the first significant commercial property to be constructed in Washington, DC, following the Civil War. From 1921 until 197 1, when it fell into disuse, the building housed the Julius Lansburgh Furniture Company. In 1973, the building was individually listed in the District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites and the National Register of Historic Places, steps which helped to protect it from the threat of demolition in 1979. Thanks go to the many volunteers who gave their time in support of this successful and enjoyable event. Special thanks to the celebration planning committee: Julianne Mueller, Chair, Howard S. Berger, William A. Bradford, Joan M. Brierton, Donald J. Hasfurther, Tamar B. King, AIA, Joan P. Leclerc, Carol J. Mitten, Valerie Palone-McDonald, Paula Phipps, and Rhonda Wilson. PREVIOUS | NEXT |
