Summer In the City Tours

The League is pleased to announce it educational activities for summer 2001. "Summer in the City" a three part series, featuring revitalization efforts, past, present, and future in three distinct neighborhoods, is scheduled for Saturday mornings, June 9, July 14, and August 11. The June 9 walking tour will be led by Carolyn Crouch, who will highlight the history and architecture of Southwest Washington. The tour will conclude with an opportunity for refreshment at the Maine Avenue waterfront. In the following months, the League's tours will feature F Street, NW, and H Street, NE, two historically significant business corridors at very different stages of redevelopment. F

Street, NW, has undergone remarkable changes in the past few years, and is home to downtown's last remaining row of nineteenth century commercial buildings. The F Street tour, led by Steve Hoglund, will look at historic downtown DC and the League's recent advocacy efforts there. In contrast to the work on F Street, NW, plans to redevelop on H Street, NE, have yet to be fully realized. Join us this summer to discover the hidden treasures both of these busy streets. Tours are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.

The League is grateful to the Hines Interest Limited Partnership, which has provided financial support for the League's educational efforts for seventeen years. We also appreciate the behind-the-scenes work of the volunteers who make our programs a success: tour leaders like Judy Scott Feldman, Dianne Dale, and Roy Graham, who have given generously of their time and knowledge; Tom and Angela Rooney, who opened their Brookland home to us; the Jewish Historical Society and the congregations of St. Mary’s. Greater New Hope Baptist and Calvary Baptist, which have welcomed us into their sanctuaries.

Opportunities to assist in the League's 2001 educational programs abound. If you have an idea for a lecture or tour (or, better yet, an expertise you would be willing to share) or have an hour or two you could spend addressing envelopes, slicing fruit and cheese, or assembling slide projectors, please call or e-mail the League (dcpreserv@aol.com).
