Virtual Home and Garden Tour: 3020 University Terrace NW (The Bazelon-McGovern House)

Join the DC Preservation League and Palisades Village on Friday, May 21st at 4:00pm EDT for a virtual tour of 3020 University Terrace NW (or The Bazelon-McGovern House) with homeowner Gordon Kit!
3020 University Terrace is a two-story wood-frame and stucco house, designed in a mid-century modern style, with a distinctive overlay of Japanese stylistic elements. Japanese-inspired plantings and garden elements surround the house on all sides. This residence was previously owned by David Bazelon, Chief Judge of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, as well as Senator (and Presidential candidate) George McGovern.
Designed by Jean-Pierre Trouchaud–whose eight highly individual houses constructed between 1949 and 1958 helped define the Palisades as a leading enclave of modernist residential design–the house is a synthesis of modernist and traditional Japanese architecture.
In collaboration with owner Gordon Kit, the DC Preservation League filed a landmark nomination for the property at 3020 University Terrace NW in October 2020. On February 25, 2021, the Historic Preservation Review Board voted to add the Bazelon-McGovern House to the DC Inventory of Historic Sites. Read more about the home here.
About Gordon Kit
Gordon Kit grew up in Houston, Texas, in a house built by his parents in the early 1960’s in a Modernist style inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. After obtaining his A.B. in biochemistry from Columbia University and M.A. in molecular biology from the University of California, Berkeley, Kit moved to Washington, DC to attend law school and has lived here ever since. Kit’s career as a patent attorney spanned three decades at the same DC boutique patent law firm. He came across the 3020 University Terrace NW during his search to buy a house here. At the time, he didn’t realize its connections to Bazelon and McGovern. While attending high school in Texas, Kit not only worked on the McGovern for President Campaign in 1971-1972, but also met McGovern during a campaign swing he made through Houston in 1972. He has lived at 3020 University Terrace NW for over 20 years and is its longest tenant.
About Palisades Village
Palisades Village is a membership-based, volunteer-driven aging in place community for adults in the Berkley, Kent, Foxhall, Palisades, Spring Valley, and Wesley Heights neighborhoods. Palisades Village is a community of caring friends and neighbors in the Palisades area of Washington, D.C. They give older residents access to tools, services, and social events that enable them to build strong relationships with their neighbors and remain in their homes as they age.
