A Journey Across America…Starting at the Willard Hotel

April 6, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm

Join the DC Preservation League on Tuesday, April 6th at 7:00pm EDT for a presentation and discussion with photographer, author, and publisher Carol M. Highsmith!

Carol has been visually documenting Washington, D.C. architecture for the past forty-one years. She started her career in the Willard Hotel in 1980, taking images of the wreck it had become (see above). She then continued down Pennsylvania Avenue and spent seventeen years documenting the rebuilding of the Willard, which included taking aerials at least once a month. She also documented the rebuilding of Union Station and produced a book about its history.

Carol has been traveling across the country and visually documenting America for her Library of Congress collection since the mid-1980s. She is honored to say her collection is one of the twenty-one featured digital collections–and she is the only living person whose work is included in that archive.

Having traveled all over America for years, Carol counts herself lucky to live in this great city that not only features magnificent monuments and federal buildings, but also has interesting neighborhoods and parks. From America’s Main Street, to Takoma Park, (where she lives) up and down 13th Street and North Capitol, she feels proud to live in a city that shines.

Carol Highsmith is an American photographer, author, and publisher who has photographed in all the states of the United States, as well as the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. She is visually documenting the entire American vista (including landscapes, architecture, urban and rural life, and people in their work environments) as a record of the early 21st century. Highsmith is donating her life’s work of tens of thousands of images, royalty-free, to the Library of Congress, which has established a rare, one-person archive featuring her collection.

The image above of Carol was taken in Crawford, Texas on the ranch of George and Laura Bush. Carol uses the highest megapixel camera for commercial photographs on earth: the Phase One IQ4, which has 150 megapixels.
