For the Record: Artfully Historic DC
April 22, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
For it’s over 120-year history, the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. has helped preserve depictions of the city’s built environment through paintings and photographs.
The Historical Society aims to continue the tradition of capturing Washington’s built environment through the arts. For the Record: Artfully Historic D.C. is a juried contest and exhibit of the 75 best new artworks that capture Washington’s changing urban landscape.
Information for Artists
Painters, photographers, and mixed media artists from the D.C. area are encouraged to submit works to the competition. Artworks must depict one of the locations on the D.C. Preservation League’s “List of Most Endangered Places for Washington, D.C.”
The deadline to submit was February 15, 2015. View the complete competition rules and submission instructions. The Capitol Hill Art League is helping guide the competition process.
All submissions will be judged by a panel of nine jurors and the top 75 artworks will be displayed for final review by the jurors at the Historical Society’s headquarters in the Carnegie Library at Mt. Vernon Square. The top 75 selections will be included in the exhibition catalog that will be provided to each semi-finalist and will also be available for sale.
The five winning entries will be accessioned into the Society’s permanent collection and the winning artists will receive a cash award. All other works shall be deemed as donations to the Historical Society and will be auctioned to support the organization’s collections.
The For the Record Exhibit
The top 75 artworks will go on display to the public at the opening exhibit reception on Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Each of the winning works will have a label describing the artist, the medium, and the location of the building in the image. The gallery will be open to the public during the Historical Society’s regular hours, Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The exhibit will close at the Historical Society’s 121st Anniversary Celebration on May 27, 2015. The event will include an award ceremony where the winning artists will be recognized. The artworks not selected for accession to the Historical Society’s collection will be included in a raffle to support the Society’s mission and programs. Raffle winners will choose the artwork and will be allowed to take the works home at the end of the evening.
