Mary Church Terrell Documentary Screening

Join DC Preservation League for a screening of Dignity and Defiance: A Portrait of Mary Church Terrellfollowed be a discussion with Robin Hamilton, the filmmaker. This short documentary connects the legacy of civil rights activist Mary Church Terrell with her LeDroit Park home, which for has been listed on DCPL’s Most Endangered Places list for 20 years.

Raised in privilege but degraded by persistent racial prejudice, Mary Church Terrell fought for the basic human right to be treated equally.  Born the year of the Emancipation Proclamation, she made it her life’s mission to fight for justice. She, along with her husband, became champions of this cause. Along the way, their house became a beacon for change. Today, her former home on 326 T Street is a dilapidated frame in LeDroit Park. Its current state threatens to erase a landmark that deserves to be preserved for a woman whose efforts continue to impact this city. What the house symbolizes, and its need to be restored challenges Terrell’s legacy as a symbol of possibility and determination.

Robin Hamilton is an Emmy-award winning journalist, filmmaker, and writer. Based in Washington, DC, Robin is a correspondent for the local Tribune affiliate’s newsmagazine program NewsPlus, and has hosted DC50-TV’s award-winning Black History month series for the past 7 years. She received two master’s degrees, one from New York University, with a concentration in broadcast journalism, and a second in public administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. She founded the ARound Robin Production Company in 2012, which creates videos for non-profits to help with fundraising, marketing and messaging initiatives. Robin wrote, produced and directed her first film, This Little Light of Mine: The Legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer, about famed Civil Rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer. It was released in 2015. Dignity and Defiance: A Portrait of Mary Church Terrell is her second film, completed in 2017.
