Members-Only Tour: Hillwood Mansion and Bomb Shelter
March 9, 2019 @ 1:30 pm - 3:15 pm
Members of DC Preservation League can join us on Saturday, March 9th, 2019 for a special guided tour of the Hillwood Estate’s Mansion and Bomb Shelter. Tickets cost $15, and include a 60-minute docent-led tour of the mansion, followed by 15-minutes in the rarely-toured bomb shelter, where we will be led by Estella Chung, Hillwood’s Director of Collections and Co-Chair of Exhibitions.
Marjorie Merriweather Post bought the 1920s neo-Georgian Hillwood Mansion in 1955. She soon decided her estate would be a museum that would inspire and educate the public. Her estate endowed the country with the most comprehensive collection of Russian imperial art outside of Russia, a distinguished eighteenth-century French decorative art collection, and twenty-five acres of serene landscaped gardens and natural woodlands for all to enjoy. Opened as a public institution in 1977, today Hillwood’s allure stems from the equally fascinating parts that make up the whole.
