Featured Tour | St. Matthew’s Court, NW
St. Matthew’s Court is a narrow alleyway that bisects the triangular-shaped block formed by Rhode Island Avenue, N Street, 17th Street and Connecticut Avenue in the Dupont Circle area. The alleyway was so-named in 1893 upon construction of St. Matthew’s Cathedral on Rhode Island Avenue and yet this secondary by-way and its buildings pre-ceded the church’s construction by a decade. Beginning in the late 1870s, as the surrounding streets began to fill with houses, the alley became home to the private stables that accompanied them. Many of these stables still survive and line the diagonal alleyway in a staggered and picturesque manner.
